Alaska Fishing |
 |
Fishing in Alaska is an Angler's dream, and if there is one place that surpasses all others, it is Prince Wales Island. Time stands still in this magnificent unspoiled setting. Here you will find a seemingly endless expanse of rolling forests, meadows, hidden lakes, whispering streams - and all of it teaming with wildlife including some of the largest game fish on earth: world-class salmon, trophy halibut, trout and Dolly Varden. The Lodge at Whale Pass is your base for salt water, freshwater, spin-cast and fly fishing. It also offers hiking, caving, whale watching, kayaking, mountain biking, canoeing and flightseeing adventures for the non-fishing enthusiast.

This itinerary starts BEFORE the accompanying cruise itinerary. |
| Day 1: Prince of Whales Island | Upon arrival at the airport in Ketchikan, please proceed downstairs to the baggage claim area and check in with the agent at the Lodge at Whale Pass counter for your floatplane flight. A representative will help collect your luggage, direct you to the luggage storage service for excess luggage, and transport you just a few yards away to the floatplane dock adjacent to the airport. Your adventure begins as you are taken on a scenic forty-minute bush plane flight right to the dock at the lodge. The Lodge at Whale Pass is located on the north end of Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska. The rest of the day is at your leisure. Tonight enjoy dinner at the lodge. Overnight at the Lodge at Whale Pass, Prince of Whales Island Alaska. | | Day 2: Prince of Whales Island | After breakfast at the lodge, plan your day. For the fisherman there is freshwater and saltwater fishing. Prince of Wales Island is blessed with hundreds of rivers, lakes and streams to cast your line. Depending on the season, you can be angling for one of the species of Salmon in the streams. Rainbow and Cutthroat Trout are in the lakes year round. The guides are happy to take you into some of their favorite holes in little rivers, streams and lakes around the island, and help you enjoy some great light tackle action. The guides also provide you with fly fishing instructions if needed. For those who want to saltwater fish, the captains are happy to take you out on either side of the Prince of Wales Island for Halibut, King Salmon, Silver Salmon and rockfish depending on the time of the season you are at the lodge. This area is well known for it's abundance of fish. You will fish from state of art 29' walk around boats they call the S.U.B.'s or Sports Utility Boats. They are complete with heated cabins, bathroom, and berths to take a nap. They have outfitted them in the latest marine electronics including vhs radio, satellite phone, radar, chart plotter and fish-finding sonar. With custom Yakima racks, the S.U.B's can pack all the toys you can handle for the day. For the non-fishing enthusiast, perhaps you will spend part of the day hiking. Prince of Wales Island is laced with hundreds of miles of remote logging roads and trails to explore. The staff at the Lodge at Whale Pass can offer you many different hiking options. There are numerous improved trails on the island, plus many more on some of the various islands surrounding the Lodge. For the more adventurous, there is caving. El Capitan Cave is the largest known cave in Alaska, and is also the first cave in Southeast Alaska where fossil bones were discovered. Tours of El Capitan are arranged through the Tongass National Forest. The cave entrance faces south across the shallow El Capitan Passage, providing a nice view of Kosciusko Island. It is also located above the El Capitan Forest Service Camp, which gets its water from a spring that emerges below the cave (and ultimately from a river inside the cave). A wooden stairway has been constructed up the long hillside to the cave and tours are provided for visitors by Tongass National Forest. Lunch and dinner are at the lodge. Overnight at the Lodge at Whale Pass, Prince of Whales Island Alaska. | | Day 3: Prince of Whales Island | After breakfast at the hotel, plan another day of activities. For those not fishing, you may want to go bike riding, canoeing or kayaking. The hotel can also arrange a day cruise to LeConte Glacier where you can kayak among the icebergs. LeConte Glacier is the southernmost tidewater glacier in the Northern hemisphere. Located outside of Petersburg, Alaska, the glacier is rapidly retreating into LeConte Inlet. While surrounded by icebergs, don't forget to look up at the majestic snowcapped solid granite mountains that also surround you and make up LeConte Bay. Flightseeing: Besides the scenic forty minute flight from the Ketchikan Airport to the Lodge dock, there are many exciting flight-seeing trips that can be arranged for half day and full day trips (flightseeing trips are at an additional cost). See the Misty Fjords National Park, fly to Anan Creek and view black & brown bears, take a spin through La Conte Glacier and the surrounding mountains. Wildlife of the Inside Passage: You will be surrounded by a diverse population of wild animals, marine mammals and seabirds that are worth the trip alone. Whether just keeping your eyes out for a seal or eagle during a day of fishing or venturing out specifically to view a Tufted Puffin and a Dall's Porpoise in the same day, staff can help you discover the wide array of flora and fauna the region has to offer. Black tail (Sitka) Deer, Loons, Black Bears, Bald Eagles, Harbor Seals, Arctic Ravens, Gray Whales, Wolves, River Otters, Martin and Mink can be seen out around the island, and from the Lodge! Orcas, Roosevelt Elk, Sea lions, Brown Bears, Humpback whales, Sea Otters, Dall's Porpoise, and more can be seen within an hour boat ride or floatplane flight. Remember, this is not Disneyland¨. The wildlife can not be 'Queued up' and they are not fenced in, but years of outdoor experience help staff guide you to the best possibilities given each season and migration. This precise resource can be easily taken for granted, but it is part of the Lodge's mission- to be good stewards and observers, all the while helping educate guests about this unique resource. Lunch and dinner at the lodge.
